Sex And The City, 2008
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Catrall and Kristin Davies

The Story: New York’s most fashion-forward ladies, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, reunite for a big screen version of our favourite TV show. Cue high drama, break-ups, a wedding and one unforgettable Vivienne Westwood dress.

The Style: There’s couture galore – Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, you name it, this film’s got it. All styled by the woman who made Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe one of the most famous (and most coveted) in the world, Patricia Field, the dresses are sexier, the accessories are cuter and the heels are higher than ever before.

Clueless, 1995
Starring: Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy

The Story: She’s pretty, she’s popular, she’s got over-the-knee socks aplenty. But when Cher (Alicia Silverstone) takes clueless newbie Tai (Murphy) under her wing, her perfect Beverly Hills life is turned upside down as she realises that being popular isn’t all it’s cracked up to be - and she’s been in love with her step brother all along.

The Style: Cool 90s fashion by numbers: think kooky tartan minisuits, faux fur backpacks, Calvin Klein slips and bodycon Alaia numbers. We might not want to dress like her anymore, but who hasn’t always wanted Cher’s colour co-ordinated, touch screen computer, motorised wardrobe?!
Marie Antoinette, 2006
Starring: Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzmann

The Story: Sophia Coppola puts her stamp on the tale of France’s most famous queen, Marie Antoinette, in this lush period drama.

The Style: A must for girls who love excess, the film’s aesthetic is rich with luxe fabrics, over-the-top hair pieces, jewelled satin shoes, exotic fans and elaborate hats. Perfect for a bit of wardrobe escapism.
Desperately Seeking Susan, 1985
Starring: Madonna and Rosanna Arquette

The Story: Bored housewife Roberta (Arquette) gets a little obsessive about the trailblazing Susan (Madonna), eventually wearing her clothes and turning up on her dates. But an accident leaves her with amnesia and a case of mistaken identity means the people that are after Susan are now after her...

The Style: Like stepping into a time travel machine, this movie sees Madonna give us oversized hair bows, mesh gloves, printed scarves, baggy trousers, stacks of rosary beads, the works. This is your one stop inspiration shop for the best of the 80s.
Annie Hall, 1977
Starring: Diane Keaton and Woody Allen

The Story: Allen and Keaton are polar opposites as Alvy Singer, a highly neurotic comedian and seasoned New Yorker, and Annie Hall, a free-spirited wannabe singer with a most-wanted wardrobe. But despite their differences, the two form a touching relationship in this multi-Oscar winning romance that doesn’t have a happy ending.

The Style: Kate and Sienna have Annie to thank for many of their sartorial staples: waistcoats, skinny ties, brogues, floppy hats and men’s shirts were just some of Miss Hall’s memorable trademarks.
Atonement, 2007
Starring: Keira Knightley and James McAvoy

The Story: This beautiful tear-jerking (and Oscar-winning) WWII adaptation centres around one hugely significant lie and the havoc it wreaks on the lives of lovers Cecilia (Knightley) and Robbie (McAvoy).

The Style: Keira’s dreamlike emerald green gown is the one we all remember, but her character is impeccably dressed throughout the film, from her retro bathing suit and cap to her silky floral blouses.
Some Like It Hot, 1959
Starring: Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon

The Story: When two friends are witnesses to a mob crime, they don drag disguises and flee the city, bumping into an all-girl music band and joining them on their trip to Florida. But when both men fall for the charms of performer Sugar Kane (Monroe), it’s only the start of the ensuing mayhem...
The Style: This film has gone down in celluloid history as Marilyn’s sexiest performance ever, thanks in part to her to-die-for figure-skimming dresses. If ever there was a lesson in how to work an hourglass figure to maximum effect, this is it.
The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001
Starring: Anjelica Houston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller and Luke and Owen Wilson

The Story: In this dark comedy, the dysfunctional and eccentric Tenenbaum family reunite when their father, Royal Tenenbaum, announces he’s terminally ill. Or is he?

The Style: We credit these oddball characters with bringing a distinctive retro style to the silver screen – especially Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tenenbaum, who’s all stripy shirt dresses, huge fur jackets and lashings of eyeliner.
Almost Famous, 2000
Starring: Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel and Anna Paquin

The Story: A fledgling rock journalist gets caught up in the heady world of rock ‘n’ roll in this coming of age drama, as he tours with fictional band Stillwater and their collection of ‘Band Aids’ – a gang of beautiful but dedicated groupies, including the inimitable Penny Lane (played by a very young Kate Hudson).

The Style: A 70s hippy-rock look that the new breed of trendsetting starlets – from Nicole Richie to Zoe Kravitz – owe so much of their style to. That’s right, it’s flared denim, boho fringing, paisley prints, fur trim coats and rose-tinted specs galore, and of course, Penny Lane turning a lunchbox into a handbag.
The September Issue, 2009
Starring: US Vogue editor Anna Wintour

The Story: Famously tight-lipped (and terrifying) US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour lets cameras behind-the-scenes at Condé Nast to film the making of the fashion bible’s biggest issue of the year.

The Style: If you’ve ever wondered what it really takes to make those glossy pages every month, then here’s the true story. Cue rails of to-die-for designer garb and a sneak peek at what Sienna Miller looks like sans make-up.
